"Do your research ahead of time"

Do Your Research Ahead of Time. If you are planning a vacation, especially if you are looking for a trip on the cheap, the more you know in advance, the better off you will be.
The first thing I usually do is contact the local chamber of commerce. They can provide free travel brochures and often coupons for what to do in the area. Sometimes, they will even offer local historical tours for free. When it comes to dining, check out the local entertainment websites.
Often a local paper will have a section on restaurants and bars. Not only will you find local favorites, but you will often find good deal.
When we travel, my husband and I like to plan to eat at restaurants during happy hours to make the most of our money. Sometimes, we’ll want to check out a nicer venue. Going at lunch instead of dinner will definitely save you a nice chunk of change.
If you love to experience the culture, be sure to check out the museums. Many museums will offer a free day or evening during the week to encourage locals to visit. You can take advantage of that too!
In the evenings a lot of museums will also have live bands, especially jazz.
We love to visit the theatre. Many theatres will give lower priced tickets (sometimes even half-price) on the day of show to get rid of inventory that they would not be able to sell. Call local theatres to find out if they offer these “rush” tickets.
Once you get to your vacation spot, be sure to ask people what their favorite things to do are. You can start with your hotel, whose concierge will give you a basic idea. But don’t be shy. Feel free to go up to a total stranger and ask where their favorite hangouts are. This works especially well near universities.
